Ted Kid Lewis / Frankie Burns

This 1922 photo captures Ted Kid Lewis' KO over  Frankie Burns in the 11th round with a smash that drove him clear across the ring. The bout was held in Holland Park England.   

Jess Willard

Carl Tremaine, the classy Cleveland Bantam, clowns with Jess Willard. Tremaine was in training for his upcoming 1923 bout with Johnny Curtain at the Garden found time to clown with the larger pugilist.

Billy Papke / Ace Hudkins

Twenty Years before this 1929 photo, Billy Papke stopped the great Stanley Ketchel. Here he clowns with Ace Hudkins who is scheduled to fight Mickey Walker in Chicago's Wrigley Field.

A great white Irish hope!

James John Coffey was born in Tully, Carrowbehy, County Roscommon on January 27th, 1890.
He was one of ten children, five boys and five girls. Fighting had always been in Jim’s blood as his father was a well-known faction fighter during the tail end of the 19th century and went under the nickname ‘The Conqueror’.When Jim retired in 1920, he had fought over 100 bouts with an impressive win-loss ratio of 38-6 in those bouts that were officially ruled upon.
Upon his return to Ireland he used his winnings to buy a large farm in Kilruddane, near Loughglynn, County Roscommon where he set up a local boxing club.
He married Kate Kenny in 1923 and had four children. Jim Coffey died in 1959 and is buried in Cuiltyboe Cemetery, Loughglynn, County Roscommon.
