Jack Johnson

Friday, January 2, 2009, marks one hundred years since Jack Johnson became the first black heavyweight boxing champion.

In commemoration of this historic event, RINGMEMORABILIA is proud to offer a rare JACK JOHNSON piece, autographed as champion.  The following item was autographed, dated and inscribed by Jack Johnson while he was the heavyweight champion of the world.  This is the first offering of this item to the boxing collectors community as it was privately acquired by RINGMEMORABILIA from the original owning family.  It features an original mounted photo of Jack Johnson with theatrical promoter George Gordon Jefferson (the brother of Stan Laurel) taken in the U.K. where Johnson, in exile from U.S. authorities, was supplementing his income with acting stage roles.  Johnson autographed the piece on the mount, "Jack Johnson, Champion of the World".  Johnson also inscribed and dated it on the mount, "From Two Friends Jack and Jeff, With Good Luck and Best Wishes, February 20, 1914".  (Several months prior to his Championship bout in Paris with Frank Moran).  Johnson also playfully added "Oy! What About It?" underneath the comically posed photograph.  Check out the photograph as the look on Johnson's face is priceless!  George Gordon Jefferson (Stan Laurel's brother) also autographed the piece on the mount below his image.  It measures 17" x 14" as professionally matted and framed.  Click on the small version for a larger view.

It is now for sale at $4500.
